Put your best foot forward and welcome your new employees the right way.  Preparation is the key to a great first impression.  Plan ahead and have everything ready for your new employee's first day.  It's a fact that how you treat your employees on their first day sets the stage for what they think about your company.  Creating a positive experience from the start can help foster good work ethics... keeping your new employees happy, motivated and productive.

How to Make a Great First Impression With Your New Hires
All of us have been the ‘new employee' at one point in our lives.  When you look back on your ‘first day' experiences, how have they been?  Good, bad or dreadful?  Here are some basic tips for bringing new hires on board, getting them up to speed and making the experience a positive one.

  1. Schedule Uninterrupted Time.  Let your new employee know that they have your undivided attention for a scheduled period of time.  Answering phone calls and emails while you are meeting with them sends the wrong message.
  2. Prepare and Set Up Their Work Area.  Nothing means more to your employee than walking in on their first day and having their desk or workstation set up with things like a computer, phone, pens, paper, office supplies, phone directory listing and the basics.  If you walked in on your first day and had to load software onto your computer and set up your email, how would that make you feel?
  3. Communicate Company and Workplace Policies.  Potential confusion or problems can easily be prevented by effectively communicating your company's workplace policies to new employees.  This includes things like dress code, time off requests, holidays, conduct guidelines and email policies.  If your company has ‘casual Fridays', that's an important piece of information for your new hires to know!  The easiest and most effective way to communicate your policies is through an employee handbook.  Don't have a handbook?  You can download a FREE sample employee handbook which you can customize for your company.
  4. Make Introductions.  Sending out a communication about new employees is a best practice for any company.  It keeps everyone informed and makes your new hire feel welcome.  Taking them on a tour of the facility to meet people or suggesting that employees stop by and introduce themselves is always a nice touch.  Having current employees find out about a new employee a month after they started isn't necessarily the best approach.
  5. Have New Hire Paperwork Ready.  Getting all the administrative paperwork completed on the first day is a great way to check that off the list and get your new employee on their way to being productive!  Make sure you have them fill out the necessary paperwork that deals with employment, benefits, direct deposit, etc.  Putting all their new hire paperwork into one package presents your company in a positive fashion.  This package of paperwork is usually referred to as a new hire or new employee kit.
  6. Balance Out Their First Day.   Let's face it, day one at a new job is not exactly the most exciting day.  A new hire's first day shouldn't be all about the paperwork.  Assigning your new employee a mentor or buddy helps them ease into your workplace culture and get to know others.
